Welcome
New patients
How to join the practice and what to expect at your first visit.
Welcome to the practice
New patients are welcome at Wilmer Medical Service. We are a general practice at 398 Wollombi Road, Farley, caring for people across Maitland and the surrounding Hunter region.
When you book your first visit, let us know you are new to the practice. A first appointment often covers more ground than a routine visit, so you may wish to ask about a longer appointment when you book.
What to bring to your first visit
- Your Medicare card
- Any concession, pension, health care or DVA cards you hold
- A list of the medicines you take, including anything you buy without a prescription, and any vitamins or supplements
- Any recent test results, referral letters or other health documents you have
If you are not sure whether something is useful, bring it anyway.
Transferring records from your previous practice
You do not need your records to attend your first visit. Having your history does help us look after you, though.
With your written consent, we can ask your previous practice to send us a copy of your medical records. We will give you a consent form to sign, and we take care of the request from there. Some practices charge a fee to transfer records. Any transfer fee is set by your previous practice, so please check with them about what applies.
If you live in a residential care facility, your health record is kept at the facility where you live, and record transfers are arranged through the facility — ask your facility manager, or call us and we will point you in the right direction.
What your first visit is like
When you arrive, we will ask you to fill in a short form with your contact details and some basic health information. Our privacy policy explains how we handle your information.
The first appointment is mostly about getting to know you. Your doctor will ask about your health history, your current medicines and any allergies, and what matters most to you. It is also a good time to ask questions or raise anything you have been putting off.
If you need an interpreter
If you prefer to speak in a language other than English, we can arrange a free interpreter through TIS National on 131 450. Let us know when you book so we can have an interpreter ready for your visit.
